Civil War Enactment and Living History

enactmentThe Georgia Blueberry Festival has found a way to make education exciting and fun for people throughout South Georgia!  In 2011, the Festival brought Civil War Re-Enactors to our elementary school in May and to the entire community during our annual Georgia Blueberry Festival in June.

The Living History, held at our local elementary school in May, consisted of the following stations, each providing a different lesson for almost 400 participating fourth and fifth graders:

  • A campsite complete with tent, cooking pot, gun rack, etc.
  • A Six-Man Unit demonstrating marching, loading, and firing of muskets.
  • A Medical Historian’s display and explanation of medical instruments used in the war.
  • An exhibit of women’s clothing including a ballroom gown and the grieving black dress.
  • The demonstration and firing of a replica cannon used during the war.

Teachers and school officials have enthusiastically requested that the Living History return next year.  Additionally, we would like to include neighboring school districts.  The Re-Enactors will supply the manpower, but need financial help for their travel expenses.

During the 2011 Blueberry Festival, two Civil War Enactments were staged on consecutive days.  This is again planned for 2012, hopefully growing from the 75 Re-Enactors, seven Artillery Cannons, and the Infantry Units who performed this past year.  Plans are underway to include a Marching Musical Group, featuring the flag, flute, and drums, and a Calvary Group.

Support History Education

We are seeking a major Sponsor specifically for the Enactment/Living History portion of the Festival.  The financial assistance of a Sponsor is needed to cover travel costs and incidentals for these participants, most of whom volunteer their time and talents.

The 2012 Blueberry Festival will be held in conjunction with these Civil War events and is expected to draw an attendance of 3,000 to 4,000 people.  The Festival features local bands, a gospel concert, children’s games and rides, beauty contests, vendors from across the southeast, plus numerous other events.  YOU could make the 2012 Georgia Blueberry Festival bigger and better than ever by becoming a major Sponsor of the Enactment/Living History event at the Diamond, Platinum, or Titanium sponsorship level.  Please consider this opportunity!
